For nearly 20 years, Alex Shvarts has been assisting clients with patent procurement and patent portfolio management, product design and launch, technology transactions, and patent litigation. Alex has worked on matters across a wide spectrum of technologies, including medical devices, Internet- and other network-based technologies, software, engines, battery technology, consumer electronics, data security, telecommunications, analog and digital circuitry, and semiconductors, among others.
Alex’s clients range from leading multi-national corporations to smaller start-ups. He works closely with clients to develop intellectual property asset development and management strategies. He implements those strategies through a wide-ranging patent practice that includes all aspects of practice in the U.S. Patent Office as well as patent offices outside of the U.S. When clients enter into transactions involving patents, Alex assists in evaluating the strength of patent portfolios as well as performing other diligence-related IP analysis.
Alex also counsels clients in connection with patent enforcement actions as well as pre-suit investigations. He advises clients concerning third party patents, including conducting product clearances and rendering formal opinions regarding infringement, validity, and enforceability issues. Alex has a broad range of patent litigation experience that he leverages in his current patent practice to ensure that his clients' patents withstand scrutiny.
Alex began his patent law career in 1999 at the law firm of Fish & Neave where he worked until its merger with Ropes & Gray in 2005 and thereafter worked at Ropes & Gray until he founded Shvarts & Leiz in 2011. In 2017, Shvarts & Leiz merged with the patent practice spin-off of Ropes & Gray to form Haley Guiliano.
